Exact radiative space-times

Abstract

Recent work on exact solutions of Einstein's field equations representing radiative spaqce-times is reviewed. We first discuss remarkable progress in the proofs of the existence of sufficiently genereal radiative space-times which are smoothly asymptoticaly flat at null infinity. Then new studies on the Robinson-Trautman solutions and on the renaiscent problem of colliding plane waves are analyzed. We only very briefly touch upon some work on cylindrical waves and the waves in the cosmological models. Finally the boost-rotation symmetric space-times are treated as the only explicitly known exact solution which describe moving singularities or black holes, are radiative and are asymptotically flat in the sense that they admit global, though not complete, smooth null infinity, as well as spatial and timelike infinities. A short discussion of a possible role which exact radiative space-times may play in other parts, of genereal relativity concludes the review.
