An outline is given of recent work on the coupled perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The Hamiltonian approach to such perturbations, initiated by Moncrief, was developed in detail, and its relation to Zerilli's work and the methods employing the Newman-Penrose formalism was established. Due attention was also paid to dipole perturbations. Gauge invariant decoupled equations for perturbations within the Newman-Penrose formalism were derived by using recent results of Chandrasekhar; these equations are given here explicitly an a more lucid form than previously. As applications, we briefly mention (i) non-spherical perturbations of gravitational collapse with charge, (ii) the motion of the charged black hole ina an asymptotically uniform electric field, and (iii) the fields of current loops near the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.
