Transportation in Prague

Public transportation

Prague has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. The metro (subway), trams and buses are used by two-thirds of Prague's population and cover the majority of the city and outskirts. To move around town, we recommend using public transport over driving or taking a taxi. (From Prague Guide.)

Tickets can be used on any type of public transportation and allow transfers between lines (metro to metro, tram to tram, etc.) and transfers between different types of transport (metro to tram, tram to bus, etc.).

A ticket must be punched (validated) by slipping it into one of the yellow boxes at the entrance to the metro station and on the tram/bus to mark the start of the validation period.

The tickets are sold through yellow ticket vending machines (instructions also in English, coins only), at ticket offices located at some metro stations, at some newsstands, and at tourist information centers.

Unfortunately for Prague, its taxi drivers have become a scar on its reputation. Fortunately for you, getting around Prague by public transportation is so easy and convenient that you may be able to simply forget about the existence of taxis.

Although the situation with taxis is getting better, many Prague taxi drivers are still as rude and dishonest as ever and will try to take advantage of you if you are a foreigner and "don't know the ropes". Luckily, there are more and more reputable taxi companies that you can rely on for good service and fair rates.

Here are some tips that might save you nightmares and a few hundred crowns:

  • Don't get into a taxi that is parked in front of the train station or at a tourist site. These are waiting for unsuspecting tourists and are known to charge rates several times higher than they should be.
  • If you need to catch a taxi on the street, make sure it is a real, registered taxi. The yellow roof lamp must be permanently installed and must say TAXI in black letters on both sides. The company name, license number and rates should be printed on both front doors.
  • Try to find out beforehand how much your ride should cost. If you're stopping a taxi on the street, you can ask the driver before getting in and even pay in advance if the amount sounds reasonable. If you're ordering a taxi by phone (always a good idea), you can get a price estimate from the dispatcher.
  • Once in the car, make sure that the rate on the taximeter corresponds to the price list posted in the car. If it doesn't, bring it to the driver's attention or have him stop the car and get off.
  • You have the right to request a printed receipt from the driver. If he refuses to give it to you, you can refuse to pay the fare.

Cars may be rented at the airport as well as in the city center. Please note that parking options in the city center are very limited (see also Prague Guide).

By public bus

Airport express

Prague Airport - Prague Main Train Station (35 min) with just a few stops:

  • Terminál 1 & 2
  • Dejvická (metro line A)
  • Náměstí Republiky (metro line B, stop on request only, close to the conference site)
  • Masarykovo nádraží (metro line B, stop on request only)
  • Hlavní nádraží (metro line C, Main Train Station)

The bus operates daily at regular 30-minute intervals [timetable].

Fare: adult 60 CZK. Tickets available directly from the driver! Regular public transport tickets are not valid on this line.

Regular public transport

Busses connecting airport with metro stations:

  • 119: Prague Airport - Dejvická (metro line A, 24 min) [timetable]
  • 100: Prague Airport - Zličín (metro line B, 18 min) [timetable]

Fare: regular public transport ticket for 32 CZK. Tickets can be bought from the the vending machines next to the bus stops (coins only) or from the kiosk called Public Transport in the both arrivals halls (07:00-21:00, credit cards accepted). The ticket must be validated by slipping it into one of the yellow boxes in the bus, as soon as you board. You can transfer to another bus, tram or metro with the same ticket (you do not have to validate it again after transfer). The standard ticket is valid for 90 minutes.

By shuttle

Shuttle bus CEDAZ: Prague Airport – City centre

Stops in the city center at "V Celnici" street - close to the conference site, náměstí Republiky square, hotels Hilton Prague Old Town and Marriott.

The shuttle operates daily 7:30 am - 7:00 pm at regular 30-minute intervals [timetable].

Fare 130 CZK per person. Tickets available directly from the driver.

Shuttle operated by Transport Airport Prague

Prague airport – any hotel in Prague

You have to book shuttle ahead.

The driver will wait for you in the arrivals area.

Fare: 480 CZK (18 EUR) per group 1-4 passengers, 680 CZK (26 EUR) per group 5-8 passengers. Fare paid directly to the driver.

Prague airport – any hotel in Prague

You have to book shuttle in advance.

The driver will wait for you in the arrivals area.

Fare: 290 CZK (12 EUR) per person - shared shuttle, 550 CZK (22 EUR) per person - private taxi. Fare paid directly to the driver.

By Taxi

There are two official Taxi companies operating at the Prague Airport. The ride to the City center should cost about 500-650 CZK. The maximum fare set by the City council is 28 CZK/km (approx 1,2 EUR/km).
